Our Mission & Values

The Ferndale Cat Shelter is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to providing medical care, adoption services, foster homes, and trap-neuter-release programs for felines in the metro Detroit area. As a no-kill organization, our mission is to improve the lives of local cats and to foster a new, higher standard of cat guardianship within our community. Our licensed shelter is the Catfé Lounge, a cat café that serves as our hub for our many activities, including cat adoption services, volunteer opportunities, and fundraising events.

Our name may give the impression that we are owned or funded by the city of Ferndale; however, this is false. Our shelter is administered by a dedicated board of cat lovers and is largely operated by volunteers. We receive no federal, state, or municipal funding, other than the occasional grant from the Michigan Department of Agriculture. We are entirely dependent upon donations (which include Catfé admission fees and adoption fees).

As an organization that’s been rooted in Ferndale since 2014, we strive to act as a beacon not just for cats, but for Ferndale’s animal loving humans. That’s why we offer a pet food pantry – stocked with food for felines – as well as engaging community events and educational opportunities.

In 2023 alone we were able to place 700 cats and kittens in loving homes. We want to continue to do more with your support. We need help to freshen up the building to our cat-tastic standards for our kitties. Work that needs to be done includes restoring the floors, painting, carpentry, repairs to the HVAC system, plumbing, electrical, replacing doors and windows, and more.

Volunteers and donations are crucial to the success of our mission. For more information about volunteering with FCS, send us a message.
